The Two Shopkeepers- Kantian Ethics and Consequentialism...
Liza G Prof. Williams Ethics 21 November 2011 The Two Shopkeepers One of the several topics covered in Kantââ¬â¢s Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals is the issued of two shopkeepers. One shopkeeper is honest with his customers in order to maintain a positive reputation and improve profits. The second one is honest because he thinks it is right and exercises his respect for the moral law. The first shopkeeper is motivated to be honest by the rewards of a positive reputation and profit. The second is motivated by respect for morally right action. Taking these motivations into consideration from the standpoint of Kantian ethics, it is clear which shopkeeper is acting right. Kant believes that actions that areâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This notion of respect for persons has to do with treating people as having intrinsic value in and of themselves. The first shopkeeper is only acting to reward himself through the means of his customers. The fact that he is not rewarding customers with honesty, but complying with the moral law in ord er to reward himself with a good reputation and profit makes it so that he is not acting rightly. The second shopkeeper, however, is acting in accordance with Kantââ¬â¢s categorical imperative. This shopkeeper acts in accordance with the first formulation of universalizability. Unlike the first, the second shopkeeper is honest because he knows it is morally right. And this passes the universalizability test since an ideal society would inhabit people who act based on the sense of right and wrong, according to Kant. The keeperââ¬â¢s honesty is also reversible, because if others in a society acted out of respect for the moral law like he is, everyone would be acting right towards one another. He complies with the second formulation by his honesty with customers out of respect for the moral law. He is not only using the treatment of his customers as a means for honesty, but also as an end respect for the moral law. In other words, being honest with his customers is not only enabling him to act morally right, but allowing him to be evaluated as respecting the moral law (Singer 274-275). Now, aShow MoreRelatedKant And The Moral Law1451 Words à |à 6 Pagesthe consequences that flow from it, but in the intention from which the act is done. This is due to the fact that , for Kant, what the motive behind your action is, matters. It is also important to note the difference between deontology and consequentialism. For consequentialists, results matter rather than the actions. An example of this is utilitarianism, where the main goal is to produce the best results regardless of the actions (like killing other people) even if this leads us to sacrifice

Yes No PROCEDURES USED TO COLLECT DATA Iââ¬â¢ve created fifty questionnaires to give to the people in the community. It was expected that at least 40 out of the 50 was going to be returned. I chose the persons to be given a questionnaire by random selection which allowed me to gather quite a good amount of information. We split the questionnaires into half 25/25 and my brother and I gave to twenty ââ¬â five houses in the top of the community and twenty ââ¬â five in the bottom of the community. The persons selected was by careful thinking and thus we know we gave to the right persons if they were not at home we left it under the door with a letter. PRESENTATION AND EXPLANATION OF DATA A total of fifty questionnaires were distributed throughout the community with 42 out of the 50 being returned. There were 35% male and 65% female. Fig 1: Length of residence respondents Figure 1 shows how long residents have been living in August Town. It is seen that 5% was living there for five (5) years while 25% was living there for ten (10) years and 55% was living there for fifteen (15) years and lastly 35% lived there for over 15 years. Fig . 2 It was agreed that by a 100% of residents that there is a particular amount of teens that are pregnant. Figure 2 shows how many teens are known of that are pregnant 15% say 1 teen 32% shows 3 teens 22% shows 6 teens and 31% shows over 8 teens in the community. Fig 3. How respondents think about sex at this age. Figure three shows how respondents think sex should be 21% said that it was relevant, while 50% said abstinence, 25% said it should be everyday, and 4% said every week. Fig 4. Figure 4 shows how parents talk to their children about sex in the community 23% said yes while 77% said no. INTERPRETATION OF DATA The residents of August Town seemed to agree to the fact that teens were not capable of controlling their sexual behavior. The people have gathered a number of teens they know of that are pregnant ââ¬â one teen (15%), three teens (32%), six teens (22%) and over eight teens (31%). Abstinence is quite popular among the residents in the community as 50% said abstinence made sense and in another instance 25% said sex should be everyday while 21% said sex is relevant and 4% said it should be every week. FINDINGS The survey has proved that there are a number of incapabilities within the teens in the community of August Town. These include: 1. Teens are having unprotected sex a lot in the community as indicated by 31% of the residents in the community 2. The people in the community say abstinence makes sense as according to 50% of the respondents in the community. 3. Parents do not talk to their children a lot about sex and it proves to make them inferior. RECOMMENDATIONS The teens in the community are under a lot of pressure and seem incompetent in the community. In order to put teens in focus parents and children must come together the school system has to start teaching more about these things. The government of the country must come up with some plan to help teens. I recommend that at least an institution be put in the community to teach children about sex at this young age and see if they can get teens to think carefully before they have sex are even if they do if they can have protected sex. Teens can play their part in this by asking their parents for help and asking them about sex and its consequences, teens should be vigilant and do their utmost best, they should focus on their education more than sexual desires. I also recommend that the government institute programs that will produce sufficient recreational activities for teenagerââ¬â¢s mentorship, and counseling in assisting them in making conscious decisions. To solve this problem I would: * Try to know more about sex and its consequences. * Talk to a government agency about sex and ask how they can help in the community. Ask my professional persons about it such as a Guidance Counsellor. * Create a group with my friends and together put up a plan to research about sex and try our best to make abstinence a long term plan. I would like greatly to thank the residents of August Town for their help and some of their time they spent on answering my questionnaires. My teacher, Miss Brown must also be thanked for guiding along the way step by step and giving me helpful tips as well. Last but not least I would like to thank my family members especially my brother who helped in acquiring information geared towards this project. INTRODUCTION August Town is a small community in the parish of Kingston. It is located in the county of Surrey, Jamaica. It can be found near Mona which is the nearest town to the community that is near the capital city of Kingston. The teenagers in the community have a lot of views towards teenage pregnancy and also there are some teenagers that are presently pregnant while others are mothers already. I have been living in August Town for the past eighteen (18) years. During this time, I have noticed that sex as become a generalized thought on most teenagersââ¬â¢ minds and also peer pressure. Teenagers are becoming very irresponsible in their behaviour towards sex and have been focusing on sex rather than their education and future. I have therefore decided to conduct a survey to investigate teenage pregnancy in the community and see how teenagers react towards it. Hitler and the Holocaust Essay Example For Students
Hitler and the Holocaust Essay From the beginning the Nazis who were being faithful to Hitler had specifically targeted the Jews. The Nazis relentless hatred for the Jews rested on the view they had of the world, which saw history as of racial struggle. They thought the Jews goal was world domination. This made the Nazis think that the Jews were an obstruction to Aryan dominance. They considered it their duty to eliminate the Jews, whom they regarded as a threat. Other factors also contributed toward the Nazi hatred of the Jews. These included the ideas of Christian anti-Semitism, which negatively stereotyped the Jews as Christ-killers. Also significant was the political anti-Semitism from the nineteenth and early part of the twentieth centuries, which singled out the Jews as a threat to the established order of society. All of these factors combined made the Jews a perfect target for persecution and ultimate destruction by the Nazis. The Nazis harassed and brutalized the Jews throughout the 1920s during the struggle for power. Speech after speech painted the Jews as Germanys misfortune and prophesied a time of reckoning. (McFee, Gordon, Are the Jews Central to the Holocaust? http://www.holocaust-history.org/jews-central) In 1933, when the Nazis came to power, the Jews were their first target. A boycott against Jewish businesses took place in April 1933 and the first laws against the Jews were enacted as early as April 17, 1933. The Jews were being progressively erased from almost every facet of German life. The Nuremberg Laws that were passed deprived the Jews of almost every remaining right and whatever freedom they had. In November 1938, Nazi hate against the Jews broke out into anti-Semitic violence, the event that took place that night became known as the Kristallnacht. Nazi mobs broke the glass in Jewish shop windows; they stole from Jewish apartments, torched synagogues, and sent thousands of Jews to concen tration camps. Over 400 Jews were murdered and a fine was levied against them. In 1941 the Nazis decided to kill the Eastern European Jews by shooting them. By the end of the year they decided to kill all European Jews. Only one man could have such a sick, compulsive mind, living in his own distorted world. A world that caused a long torturous journey of converting living souls, into ashes and gas. This man was known as Adolph Hitler. When Hitler was young he was infected with syphilis. As he grew older the disease caused an inflammation of the brain. It is believed that is what made him a sick, paranoid man that was full of delusions. With respect of the Jewish Question. The Fuhrer has decided to make a clean sweep. He prophesied to the Jews that if they again brought about a world war, they would live to see their annihilation in it. That wasnt just a catch-word. The world war is here, and the annihilation of the Jews must be the necessary consequence. (McFee, Gordon, Are the Jews Central to the Holocaust? Http://www.holocaust-history.org/jews-central/ )Hitler had said if there was another war that he would annihilate the Jews. During the war he said he was in the process of annihilating them. In his Testament he said he had did exactly what he had said he would. For the satisfaction of one man, a whole nation was crucified and wounded. The Holocaust was from January 30, 1933 to May 8, 1945. The term Holocaust was coined to describe the uniquely Jewish aspect of the Final Solution. (McFee, Gordon, Are the Jews Central to the Holocaust? http://www.holocaust-history.org/jews-central/ ) In 1933 there lived approximately 450,000 Jews. When Hitler first came to power 50,000 Jews fled Germany. By 1938 150,000 Jews had left, but there were still about 300,000 Jews still in Germany. But eventually it became harder and harder for any of them to flee. The Jews that were still in Germany had their possessions taken away from them and walled into ghettos. They were powerless. .uf9373b357ea96d1b730656a76bead629 , .uf9373b357ea96d1b730656a76bead629 .postImageUrl , .uf9373b357ea96d1b730656a76bead629 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uf9373b357ea96d1b730656a76bead629 , .uf9373b357ea96d1b730656a76bead629:hover , .uf9373b357ea96d1b730656a76bead629:visited , .uf9373b357ea96d1b730656a76bead629:active { border:0!important; } .uf9373b357ea96d1b730656a76bead629 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uf9373b357ea96d1b730656a76bead629 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uf9373b357ea96d1b730656a76bead629:active , .uf9373b357ea96d1b730656a76bead629:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uf9373b357ea96d1b730656a76bead629 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uf9373b357ea96d1b730656a76bead629 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uf9373b357ea96d1b730656a76bead629 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uf9373b357ea96d1b730656a76bead629 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uf9373b357ea96d1b730656a76bead629:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uf9373b357ea96d1b730656a76bead629 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uf9373b357ea96d1b730656a76bead629 .uf9373b357ea96d1b730656a76bead629-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uf9373b357ea96d1b730656a76bead629:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Big Bang Theory EssayMany Jews were hauled off into concentration camps. Thomas Hobbes Analysis Essay Example For Students
Thomas Hobbes Analysis Essay Thomas Hobbes Thomas Hobbes was an English philosopher who was lived from 1588-1679. He attended Oxford University where he studied classics. His occupation was a tutor, but he also traveled around Europe to meet with scientists and to study different forms of government. He became interested in why people allowed themselves to be ruled, and what would be the best form of government for England. Thomas Hobbes was the first great figure in modern moral philosophy. Hobbes had a pessimistic view of people; he believed humans were selfish creatures who would do anything to better their positions. He also thought that people could not be trusted to make decisions on their own, and a country needed an authority figure to provide direction and leadership. Therefore, Hobbes believed in an absolute monarchy a government that gave all power to a king or queen. He also thought that people should obey their king, even if he is a tyrant. He said that because people were only interested in promoting their own self-interests, democracy would never work. In fact, he thought democracy was very dangerous. But even though he distrusted democracy, he believed that a diverse group of representatives presenting the problems of the common person would prevent a king from being unfair and cruel. Hobbes coined the phrase, Voice of the people, meaning one person could be chosen to represent a group with similar views. We will write a custom essay on Thomas Hobbes Analysis specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now In 1651, Thomas Hobbes wrote his famous work, Leviathan which put into writing his views on democracy and monarchy. In this work, he said that life in the state of nature is nasty, brutish, and short and without government, we would be living in this state of nature. Hobbes ideas that people should decide how they should be ruled set the stage for the social contract proposed some years later by John Locke. Society makes a kind of contract with itself to give power to a ruling body. In Leviathan Hobbes also said that nations are like people in that they are selfishly motivated, and that every country was in constant battle for power and wealth. He wanted people to stop fighting and relinquish control to a single ruler. Hobbes ideas werent just about government, though. He was one of the strongest opponents to the idea of spirituality. He believed in materialism that everything that happens is a result of the physical world, and that the soul does not exist. According to Hobbes, nature is made up of material matter there is nothing spiritual or magical about it. Hobbes didnt like the idea of spirit in the mind, because he felt it led people to cause trouble by claiming they were directly in contact with God. In fact, during Thomas Hobbes life, people often used spirituality as an excuse to disobey the government and the church. Hobbes believed that all thoughts and sensations in the mind are produced mechanically by the senses and the brain, but the problem is that our mind doesnt always tell us the truth, it often tells us things we want to believe, or things that were afraid might be true.

Caribbean Studies, History Essays
Caribbean Studies, History Essays Caribbean Studies, History Essay Caribbean Studies, History Essay Peasantry Peasantry in the Caribbean dates back to 1838. Technically, peasantry is a combination of the cultivation of a variety of goods and the raising of a variety of animals on fairly small pieces of property without the aid of hired labour and largely for subsistence purposes. Brierly and Ruben (1988) describe peasants as typically economically deprived people at the lower strata off society. Characteristics of Caribbean peasantry Historically existed on the crevices of society ââ¬â any area where the main economic activities of the Europeans did not have control. Historically the peasantry existed in opposition to and in competition with the plantation despite their interdependence. According to Marshall, Caribbean peasantries incorporated non-agricultural activities such as fishing, shop keeping, and casual estate work. Caribbean peasantries have always involved the production of some goods for sale in local markets. Types of peasant communities in the Caribbean Europea n peasant communities Runaway slave communities ââ¬â The maroons of Jamaica, Spanish Santo Domingo and Suriname for examples. Nutri Natural, Herbal, and Vitamin Supplements Research Paper
Nutri Natural, Herbal, and Vitamin Supplements - Research Paper Example The competition is what poses the greatest threat to entrants in the market as they have to consider bridging any gaps between what the consumer wants and what is being provided for them in the market. Unfortunately, more organizations in the market translate to the consumer having more bargaining power, which is never a good thing for the company. The paper seeks to identify the competition that will face Nutri Natural, Herbal, and Vitamin Supplements as it enters the market. It is fair to say that there is no single market that is not prone to competition. Naturally, an investor identifies a consumer need and develops a product that will satisfy the need. Later, the demand for the commodity increases and the company makes increased profits. As other investors note the growing demand, they develop their own version of the products. More investors join the market flooding it and bringing more choices to the consumer. Eventually, only those manufacturers that have a competitive edge r emain in business or make any profit. Nutriââ¬â¢s entry to the market will face stiff competition from popular manufacturers of food supplements and vitamins. These competitors include but are not limited to Bayer, Seven Seas, Bayenica, and Boots (Leah 10). Internet use has become widespread over the past decade. However, not every company has utilized the full potential of using the internet to market its products. The advent of social media has made online marketing more effective as a platform for companies to use to create awareness of the products offered. A company that takes advantage of every opportunity they have to market their goods becomes the best possible way to remain competitive and thus profitable. Nutri is aiming to take full advantage of what technology offers companies and will be using an online platform to sell the supplements.Ã
