In Michael Foucault’s Discipline Punish, he sought to explain his theory of surveillance within contemporary society. He does this by using the idea of the Panopticon as an example. The panopticon is a structure, created by Jeremy Bentham, which is built in a way that allows all angles to be easily viewed. The design, which is a circular, spherical building, allows those conducting the surveillance to see everything without having to worry about corners and non visible spots. The subjects that are being viewed never actually know when they are being specifically watched due to the construction of the building. It is also built so that the viewer cannot be easily seen. This structure is mainly existent in prisons but can also be used within schools, factories and military structures. Surveillance is defined as being the â€Å"continual observation of a person or group, especially on suspected of doing something illegal. (Encarta Dictionary) The most obvious example would be in the prison system where prisoners are being watched by prison wardens and guards. Cameras are set up at ever imaginable angle to monitor the behavior of the inmates. These cameras are active 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, recording every move of every prisoner. Furthermore, if the guard were to stand in the middl e of the panopticon, he would also be able to view all angles easily without too much movement. Foulcault formulated his theory of contemporary society, in relation to the panopticon. The idea of total surveillance represents power in society. The individual is constantly being watched which consequently alters their behavior. Because the surveillance is constant and unknown, we develop a state of paranoia within ourselves and never feel completely alone unless we are absolutely sure that we are in a private space. Foulcault’s interpretation extends to the acts of the government: â€Å"The role of legislation allows the means of authority to spread without need for one central authority figure. This advocates the self monitoring society which in essence is panopticism. † (Gieser) It is said that because the government is seen as the overseer. We, the citizens, develop our own sense of self-surveillance that in turn, satisfies the surveillance tactic. Foucault felt that this panoptic ordeal â€Å"dehumanize[d] and strip[ped] the population of their power†. (Gieser) Thus, it leaves us with no actual sense of normalcy and security. 5. The idea of culture industry was created by Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer of the Frankfurt School. Culture industry is simply the use of manufactured goods in pop culture to influence society, thus causing society to be passive and not worrying about economical woes. Society develops unnecessary wants and needs while capitalism is masked and flourishing. This form of culture molds the idea of what’s important to society through mass production and ignores what works for the individual. Thus, a sense of uniqueness is lost. The Frankfurt School felt that this was an important way of trying to understand modern capitalist society because it was clearly going in that direction, at the time and now. Karl Marx inspired these beliefs through his own works and encouraged the Frankfurt School to expose capitalists. They did this by using ancient examples that proved that these frivolous items being praised were only there to mask the fact that we, the people were being manipulated and controlled. Exposing society to the control was supposed to encourage them to break free and regain their senses of self. The focus was on capitalism because it was strengthening its hold onto society at a constant rate. Adorno felt that through exposing these capitalist tactics, the cycle would reverse, causing individuals to gain there personality back, but that did not happen. Yes No PROCEDURES USED TO COLLECT DATA I’ve created fifty questionnaires to give to the people in the community. It was expected that at least 40 out of the 50 was going to be returned. I chose the persons to be given a questionnaire by random selection which allowed me to gather quite a good amount of information. We split the questionnaires into half 25/25 and my brother and I gave to twenty – five houses in the top of the community and twenty – five in the bottom of the community. The persons selected was by careful thinking and thus we know we gave to the right persons if they were not at home we left it under the door with a letter. PRESENTATION AND EXPLANATION OF DATA A total of fifty questionnaires were distributed throughout the community with 42 out of the 50 being returned. There were 35% male and 65% female. Fig 1: Length of residence respondents Figure 1 shows how long residents have been living in August Town. It is seen that 5% was living there for five (5) years while 25% was living there for ten (10) years and 55% was living there for fifteen (15) years and lastly 35% lived there for over 15 years. Fig . 2 It was agreed that by a 100% of residents that there is a particular amount of teens that are pregnant. Figure 2 shows how many teens are known of that are pregnant 15% say 1 teen 32% shows 3 teens 22% shows 6 teens and 31% shows over 8 teens in the community. Fig 3. How respondents think about sex at this age. Figure three shows how respondents think sex should be 21% said that it was relevant, while 50% said abstinence, 25% said it should be everyday, and 4% said every week. Fig 4. Figure 4 shows how parents talk to their children about sex in the community 23% said yes while 77% said no. INTERPRETATION OF DATA The residents of August Town seemed to agree to the fact that teens were not capable of controlling their sexual behavior. The people have gathered a number of teens they know of that are pregnant – one teen (15%), three teens (32%), six teens (22%) and over eight teens (31%). Abstinence is quite popular among the residents in the community as 50% said abstinence made sense and in another instance 25% said sex should be everyday while 21% said sex is relevant and 4% said it should be every week. FINDINGS The survey has proved that there are a number of incapabilities within the teens in the community of August Town. These include: 1. Teens are having unprotected sex a lot in the community as indicated by 31% of the residents in the community 2. The people in the community say abstinence makes sense as according to 50% of the respondents in the community. 3. Parents do not talk to their children a lot about sex and it proves to make them inferior. RECOMMENDATIONS The teens in the community are under a lot of pressure and seem incompetent in the community. In order to put teens in focus parents and children must come together the school system has to start teaching more about these things. The government of the country must come up with some plan to help teens. I recommend that at least an institution be put in the community to teach children about sex at this young age and see if they can get teens to think carefully before they have sex are even if they do if they can have protected sex. Teens can play their part in this by asking their parents for help and asking them about sex and its consequences, teens should be vigilant and do their utmost best, they should focus on their education more than sexual desires. I also recommend that the government institute programs that will produce sufficient recreational activities for teenager’s mentorship, and counseling in assisting them in making conscious decisions. To solve this problem I would: * Try to know more about sex and its consequences. * Talk to a government agency about sex and ask how they can help in the community. Ask my professional persons about it such as a Guidance Counsellor. * Create a group with my friends and together put up a plan to research about sex and try our best to make abstinence a long term plan. The Nazis relentless hatred for the Jews rested on the view they had of the world, which saw history as of racial struggle. They thought the Jews goal was world domination. This made the Nazis think that the Jews were an obstruction to Aryan dominance. They considered it their duty to eliminate the Jews, whom they regarded as a threat. Other factors also contributed toward the Nazi hatred of the Jews. These included the ideas of Christian anti-Semitism, which negatively stereotyped the Jews as Christ-killers. Also significant was the political anti-Semitism from the nineteenth and early part of the twentieth centuries, which singled out the Jews as a threat to the established order of society. All of these factors combined made the Jews a perfect target for persecution and ultimate destruction by the Nazis. The Nazis harassed and brutalized the Jews throughout the 1920s during the struggle for power. Speech after speech painted the Jews as Germanys misfortune and prophesied a time of reckoning. A boycott against Jewish businesses took place in April 1933 and the first laws against the Jews were enacted as early as April 17, 1933. The Jews were being progressively erased from almost every facet of German life. The Nuremberg Laws that were passed deprived the Jews of almost every remaining right and whatever freedom they had. In November 1938, Nazi hate against the Jews broke out into anti-Semitic violence, the event that took place that night became known as the Kristallnacht. Nazi mobs broke the glass in Jewish shop windows; they stole from Jewish apartments, torched synagogues, and sent thousands of Jews to concen tration camps. Over 400 Jews were murdered and a fine was levied against them. In 1941 the Nazis decided to kill the Eastern European Jews by shooting them. By the end of the year they decided to kill all European Jews. Only one man could have such a sick, compulsive mind, living in his own distorted world. A world that caused a long torturous journey of converting living souls, into ashes and gas. This man was known as Adolph Hitler. When Hitler was young he was infected with syphilis. As he grew older the disease caused an inflammation of the brain. It is believed that is what made him a sick, paranoid man that was full of delusions. With respect of the Jewish Question.
